There is no direct connection from Milan Linate Airport (LIN) to Lago di Garda. However, you can take the line 4 subway to Tricolore, take the walk to p.za del tricolore, take the line 9 tram to Stazione Centrale M2 M3, take the walk to Milano Centrale, take the train to Desenzano Garda-Sirm, then take the taxi to Lago di Garda.

Re: No car. I agree that the best area to stay would be Bardolino or Garda, both have good ferry and bus services for getting around the lake. Unfortunately the lake will be very busy even into September. You will need to check locations of apartments very carefully as they can often be a good way of the towns.
