Problem solved by selling the the car. It needs a new wiring loom. Due to not being able to trust buying one from a breakers the only way to go is a new one from Citroen, which will be more than the car is worth. Now have a 2007 C4 Picasso (£1000) with 68000 miles, service history up to 38000.

Thanks for that data. Thankfully, I have managed to get the car started this morning - probably more luck than judgement ! I pressed the little priming pump on the filter loads of times, tried to start the engine, it spluttered and nearly died, so I quickly pressed the throttle pedal down and it luckily picked up the revs and then with one or two more splutters it was fine !
